Music in the making
I think if you're a good songwriter, that's what you are first
- not a star or celebrity. Tom Cochrane
Around 2000 songs. That's roughly how many songs and instrumentals I've written in 37 years. Some took 15 minutes to make up, some 10 years. I've released nearly 200 on CD, cassette and vinyl. So 1 in 10 see the light of day. One thousand eight hundred songs I don't want anyone to hear.
The 52 song project
Dreamin' and Streamin' (as Jeff Hawkins says)
Where
did I find 52 songs...
The lives going on around me, my own
sappy pieces of weepy guitar licks, the ideas that fell into my lap directly
from the good will of others, my Dad.
The travelogue in my head of going so many places for
30 years, the fear of nausea, the stranger's kindness that rescues, the hollowness
of singing to no one, the sweet drive away after singing to someone and the
sense of impact, my wife Candy.
My year in songs was a real take on what songs are about to me. It wasn't
born to sell. No record deals here; no need to write songs for
those ears.
My 52 songs gave me what I needed. In 2009, I was a songwriter.
