Music is one of the most powerful ways in which statements can be made about important issues. No doubt, you have already compiled a list of your favorite songs and no doubt they are your favorites for a variety of reasons. For your assignment, you will be expected to choose/do one/some/all of the following things.

Listen to the songs from our guest performer, James Hersch, read the words as you listen to the performance and then:

1. Write your responses to the following questions:

• What does the song say to you? Which words/phrases are the most meaningful/moving/powerful?
• What do you think the song's writer meant to say?
• What did you like best about the melody and the musical accompaniment and why do you think the songwriter wrote it that way?

2. Choose a song that you are familiar with that speaks to the same issues and bring in the following:

• the cd/tape/record that has your song and the album cover along with any information included in the album.
• a copy of the words to your song- typed by you, unless you can make a clear and large enough copy from the album jacket. This will then be made into a transparency.
• a prepared "mini-speech" that gives information about your artist, explains the meaning of the song, why you chose it and why it is meaningful to you.

3. Write your own song for our guest performer who will help you set it to the music. (Consider helping with the singing!)

4. Write your own song AND music and then accompany yourself and perform it for the class.
