a year of songs: number 44
- Thursday, October 29th:
Long before I ever thought I'd be a song writer, I loved listening to stories in a song. "Big Bad John", "El Paso" and "Lily Of the West" were country story songs I was mesmerized by. This week I decided to use '52 Songs' as an opportunity to write a song in that tradition, set in more current times. Here's Number 44, "Rivers Of Rain":

"You know, I've been reading this weird stuff with Aren this semester about the history of media, and one thing we came across was this whole notion of free in the new economy. The incredibly low cost of sharing info on the Internet is turning free into a more pervasive and different sort of marketing tool than it's ever been before.
One book we read (Free: the future of a radical
price) says that musicians like you, who share music for free to build a following
and leverage that into other ways to earn money from the music are the wave
of the future. You've been ahead of the curve--or at least riding the wave!
Hope that's comforting." -
