Thursday, June 4th: It's the old injuries that live deep
inside of us that take so long to heal. Sometimes they become our security
and identity, and we don't want them to fully heal. Our bone and tissue
know how to heal, but the emotional injuries linger. Number 23, "Heal".
Hear the "Radio Heartland" interview about "52 Songs" with
Dale Connelly of Minnesota Public Radio.
When I began this
project, I intended to experiment
with new sounds and approaches to writing and recording a song. This
week I chose to omit the dominant chord entirely from my song to see how the
melody would change, and how the the harmonic feel would change. Cadences and
phrases really depend on the dominant
chord to return to the home chord, but there are other ways to get there.
Maybe you can hear the difference. Kind of geeky music stuff, I know...
I also chose to begin with the phone book this week. I usually start with
the guitar,
leading to melody, leading to words. I started with the tempo set with whacking
the phonebook, then let the guitar find it's way layered over that sound.
The Project:
52 songs in 52 weeks from January 1 to December 24, 2009. I'm going to attempt to write a new song (or tackle old unfinished songs) at
a pace of one per week.
