Thursday, May 7th: It's the time of year when kids turn
into young adults, plans are made, dreams are embarked on, hearts are bursting
and broken. This song is for a girl who has to fight for everything, but
she'll get there: "I Know Jenny" version 2:
I've
been asked to comment on the experience of recording these songs on a deadline.
I realized one of the things that hindered me from being productive as a
recording artist is all the nuts and bolts decisions that have to be made:
what mics to use, what guitars to use, arranging for other musicians to come
in, etc. I also tried too much to be perfect. To free
me up from that, I force myself to go with what seems best at the time, play
all the parts myself and just go with the flow. I also decided it was OK to
make some mistakes. Imperfections can turn out OK.
I'll stay away from
any drum solos on the phonebook, and I won't be shredding on the electric guitar,
but I still want some elements of other sounds. So far, my only rule is that
everything is played by my hands, i.e. no computer generated passages, despite
that temptation of perfection the computer offers.
Next
week: pictures from the basement studio.
THE PROJECT: 52 songs in 52 weeks.
January
1st -December 24th, 2009.
I'm going to attempt to write a new song (or tackle old unfinished songs) at
a pace of one per week. I'll record them and post them here, as well as the 52
Songs facebook
group and ReverbNation.com.
I'm hoping you will take a few minutes to listen and/or download them (for free)
and occasionally give me feedback. A
few more details.
